your USCT legacy now . . . . Did
you know that . . . . Many African American soldiers changed
their names after the war? Over 209,145 soldiers served, as well as
19,000 sailors, and they came from every state and territory to serve?
There were white as well as black United States Colored Troops? Already,
over 2000 relatives of USCT have sent copies of their family tree to us at the
African American Civil War Memorial? Have you done your homework yet?
You may be a descendant of a soldier who served with the United States Colored
Troops. Talk to your relatives and oldest members in your family. Get
their stories. Identify male members on both sides of your family who
would have been 18-45 years old between 1861-1865. Find out if they are listed
in the database of soldiers
on the National Park Service Civil
War Soldiers and Sailors web site. Once you find a link, send the
names of those who served in the Civil War together with a family tree of descendants,
copies of photos, drawings, or letters that you may have, and stories you may
have collected to: Frank Smith, Executive Director of the African American
Civil War Memorial 1000 U Street NW, Washington, DC 20001. 202-667-2667.
