About the Museum
The museum is located at 1925 Vermont Ave, NW Washington DC, directly across the street from the African American Civil War Memorial, located at 10th and U Streets, NW Washington DC. The use of public transportation, including taxis, is recommended. The nearest metro stop to the museum is the green/yellow line, U St./African American Civil War Memorial Cardozo stop. Exit the metro station at 10th and U St. NW. For bus route information please visit the Washington Metro Transit website.

How long should I plan for my visit to the Museum?
The museum has a rich quantity of artifacts and information on display; we recommend that visitors at least allot an hour to visit the museum. We also recommend that you view our list of programs and events to get a sense of the kinds of activities you’d like to participate in during your visit. You may also sign up for our free email notifications for the latest information and events.
May I take pictures in the museum?
Patrons may take pictures. We ask that all visitors not use flash or lighting when taking their photos. Feel free to share your pictures with us on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook.
How much is admissions to the museum?
The museum is free.
Do I have to make a reservation for my group?
Larger groups are encouraged to make a reservation. Please refer to special announcements on the home page and social media for changes in operations.
I am planning to visit the museum with kids. Do you have any tips?
We do recommend downloading one of our scavenger hunts or picking one up at the front desk when you visit. Scavenger hunts can be found on the Civil War Primer Educator Portal.
Do you have any place to eat in the museum?
No. We do not have a restaurant or designated area to eat inside the museum. All food and drinks are permitted inside the exhibits. There are restaurants within walking distance of the museum.
How do I schedule a group visit?
You can book your group using this form (https://afroamcivilwar.org/wordpress/schedule) on the schedule a visit page. Review the calendar for an available time and book your group using the form.

Indoor exhibit is closed
The Museum is currently under renovation. The Memorial may be visited at anytime but the indoor exhibits are closed.

Directions
The Museum is located at 1925 Vermont Ave. NW in Washington, DC. It is directly across the street from the African American Civil War Memorial at 10th and U Streets, NW.
Parking
Parking in the area is limited. We recommend taking public transportation or an alternate transportation service.
Metro Rail Transit
The nearest metro stop to the Museum is the green and yellow lines. How to get here:
- U Street/African American Civil War Memorial Cardozo stop.
- Exit the metro station at 10th and U Street NW.
Metro Bus Transit
Please visit the Washington Metro Transit website for bus route information.
Bus Drop-Off
Buses may drop off passengers in front of the Memorial or Museum along Vermont Avenue. However, the bus cannot stay or be idle in front of the Museum during the visit.
Accessibility
- We can lend you a wheelchair or a collapsible chair—just ask at the information desk.
- Visitors may borrow a standard manual wheelchair during their visit.
- We have a prayer room in our 1830 Warehouse. Let one of the team know if you’d like to use it.
- There is a hearing loop in the New Warehouse.
- Single occupancy / all gender restrooms are available.
- We are a breastfeeding-friendly museum.

Group Tours
If you plan to visit the Museum with more than 12 people, please contact us beforehand so we can help you plan your day.
Field Trips
We offer two options for field trips:
- Virtual.
- Outdoors at the African American Civil War Memorial.
We cannot accommodate indoor visits to the Museum at this time. Our exhibits are being relocated to their new home. However, we are excited to announce that starting May 2024, we will be accepting in-person field trips at our new location. In the meantime, we are happy to offer classroom visits and virtual tours.
