Grand Opening Postponed

It is with sincere regret that we must postpone the grand reopening of the African American Civil War Memorial Museum, initially scheduled for November 11, 2025. Ongoing construction delays and unforeseen supply-chain disruptions due to the government closure have prevented the final work from being completed on time. Our primary goal is to ensure a complete visitor experience. Rushing to open would compromise the integrity of the exhibitions and the visitor experience. For these reasons, we have decided to delay the grand reopening event until the necessary work is completed.

Even though the museum will not yet be open, you can still participate in the following activities that will take place at the memorial located at 10th and U Streets N.W., Washington, D.C., on November 10th and 11th.

November 10th.

  • 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.: Book Fair – Featuring authors of works related to the Civil War to Civil Rights.
  • 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.: Descendants Happy Hour —Connect, reflect, and celebrate with descendants and supporters of the United States Colored Troops during a memorable happy hour.

November 11th.

We share your disappointment and apologize for any inconvenience this postponement may cause. We are grateful for your support and patience as we complete these final steps to deliver a museum that meets our collective expectations for excellence. We will be in touch with updated plans and an invitation to the rescheduled opening as soon as a date is set. We will also continue to provide updates via our website. www.afroamcivilwar.org

Thank you for your understanding and continued support. We look forward to welcoming you to the newly finished African American Civil War Memorial Museum very soon.

Sincerely,

Dr. Frank Smith
